The diving certifications are targeted towards commercial diving. CMOS diving school is programmed to teach subjects related to commercial SCUBA diving to 30 meter, Class 1 Commercial Diver (Basic Surface Supplied Air Diving to 30m) and Class 2 Commercial Diver (Advanced Surface Supplied Air Diving to 50m).

A class 2 diver can further pursue his careers an inspection diver, diver medic, diver supervisor e.t,c.

Commercial SCUBA Diving to 30m

This course will prepare the student into commercial diving of Grade 1 and 2. It includes underwater diving with Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) with air as the breathing gas. Maximum water depth of training is within 30 meters. Swimming training is also provided for those that do not know how to swim.

This course specifies the training activities and competencies required for the training and certification of divers who are required to work safely and competently using Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA).

This is the first level of certification as occupational divers. Divers in this category are competent in the use of small hand tools or in the conducting of inspections using no decompression dives and with direct access to the surface. It is ideally suited to marine archaeologists, research divers, inspection engineers, media and the like.


Lessons on effect of wave and current on dives, basic knowledge of diving health risk, prevention, control and treatment in dives are given.

Qualifications

Minimum of four (4) credits at O’Level Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent in maximum of two sittings. The four (4) must include Mathematics, English Language, Physics and biology or chemistry. Candidates who do not have the four (4) credits may apply but will be required to fulfill the requirement before proceeding to Class 1 and 2. Prospective candidate must be medically fit to dive. Ability to read and write in English language is mandatory.

Class 1 Commercial Diver (Basic Surface Supplied Air Diving to 30m)

This course specifies the training activities and competencies required for the training and certification of divers who are required to work safely and competently using Surface Supplied Breathing Apparatus (SSBA) to depth of 30m.


Diver preparing to leave surface through Lunch and Recovery System (LARS)

This is the second level of certification as an occupational diver and it covers occupational onshore Air Diving. Divers in this category are competent in the use of surface supplied breathing apparatus, cutting and welding equipment, pneumatic or hydraulic tools, video and still photography.

Class 2 Commercial Diver (Advanced Surface Supplied Air Diving to 50m)

This course specifies the training activities and competencies required for the training and certification of divers who are required to work safely and competently.
A. Using surface supplied breathing apparatus (SSBA) to depths of 50m.
B. On sites with surface recompression chambers present or within convenient distance.

This is the third level of certification as an occupational diver and it covers occupational offshore Air diving. Divers in this category are competent in the use of a full range of underwater tools and breathing apparatus.

They are also competent in the use of wet bells, hot water suits, and surface decompression with oxygen and hyperbaric chambers. This level of training is the most sought after.

Qualifications

Class 1 dive certificate or Minimum of four (4) credits at O’Level Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent in maximum of two sittings. The four (4) must include Mathematics, English Language, Physics and biology or chemistry. Prospective candidate must be medically fit. Ability to read and write in English language is mandatory.

Candidates seeking admission into a Commercial Diving School Grade (2) shall complete a written Aptitude Test successfully in the following subjects:
(i) English Language,
(ii) Mathematics,
(iii) Physics, and
(iv) Biology (as related to diving).

Duration: 6 months

Note: All prospective candidate for dive programme shall be a competent swimmer and is able to swim a minimum length of 660fts (200m) in a diving suit weighted to neutral buoyancy.

Standard of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW)

The International Convention on Standard of Training Certificate and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 2010, as amended sets qualification standards for master officers and watch personnel on sea going merchant ships. STCW was adopted in 1978 by Conference at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, and entered into force in 1984. The Convention was significantly amended in 1995.


The Amendments require that Seafarers be provided with “Familiarization Training” and “Basic Safety Training” which include Basic Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, and Security Awareness (ISPS). This Training is intended to ensure that Seafarers are aware of the hazards of working on a vessel and can respond appropriately in an emergency.

Qualifications

Ability to read and write in English language is mandatory.

The Offshore Pipeline Technology Training course is now introduced by the Center for Maritime and Offshore Studies of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources in Effurun. The goal of the course is to provide sufficient understanding of the offshore pipelines from the Front End Engineering Design of pipelines, through construction, installation, IRM (Inspection, Repair and Maintenance) and offshore pipeline facility management. The course is intended for graduates, pipeline industry managers and oil and gas workers with keen interests on offshore pipelines.
The training will be performed by experts from the pipeline industry. Less mathematics will be involved with more emphasis on practicalities and present concerns on pipelines, especially in Nigeria. Students will have a pipeline facility tour on the fourth (4th) day of the programme. The programme is coordinated at the University of the Petroleum Resources, Effurun in collaboration with Global Maritime Academy in Ughelli.



Generally, pipelines shall be discussed with more emphasis on offshore pipelines.
