Call for application to the position of Research/Teaching Assistant - Contract Responsibilities & Procedures

Post Graduate Students as Research/Teaching Assistants: The research/teaching assistants are students who, in the course of their academic training, are employed in contract, part-time or temporary research/teaching positions, where the student’s academic training is based in part on the research performed or where the research duties being performed will assist the student in fulfilling his or her degree requirements or where the teaching duties being performed will support the University College/Department as well as provide mentoring for the teaching assistant. All duties and services of the research/teaching assistants are to be carried out under the supervision and direction of Senior College/Department Officer and the Head of Department/Dean of the College.

Qualifications

The research/teaching assistants must be currently enrolled as a post graduate PhD student as a condition of appointment. The research/teaching assistants must be a post graduate student in good academic standing and making satisfactory progress toward an advanced degree. Good academic standing is defined by a GPA of at least 3.5/5 or a 60%. Failure to meet these requirements will be grounds for withdrawal of the appointment and termination of employment status in this title.

Other consideration includes the under listed preferred skills:

●​Strong research and writing experience.

●    Policy research skills, including the ability to synthesize content from a broad range of sources. 

●​Data analysis capabilities, including quantitative and qualitative data.

●​Strong written communication skills and the ability to transform complicated information into easy to understand materials.

●​Ability to interact professionally with senior-level individuals (e.g., local, state, and national policymakers), stakeholders, and organizations.

●​Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

●​Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with varied responsibilities and able to respond flexibly to changing needs.

●​Proficient in use of standard computing software (including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint); capacity to learn additional job-specific programs as required.

●​Administrative, project coordination, and/or project management experience is preferred.

Performance Evaluation

A research/teaching assistant is expected to remain registered in courses that count toward the post graduate degree for at least two semesters of full-time programme of study. Failure to meet the enrollment requirements as set forth above, or any withdrawal or change of registration to a course load below the applicable enrollment minimum, which is not approved in advance by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) Academic and/or Dean of Post Graduate Studies, will be grounds for withdrawal of a post graduate student’s research/teaching assistant service appointment and termination of employment status in this title.
