This study was designed to investigate the effects of the Niger Delta oil crisis on the women folks. Oil crisis could result in vast effects on humans and animals which include social, ecological, health, economical amongst others. The environment (air, water, soil) usually indicates the presence of hydrocarbon and petrogenic pollution and this affects aquatic lives and agricultural practices. These result in decrease in fishing resources, damage to marine flora and fauna, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, coastal and marine erosion and flooding. The inability of the people to fix these problems and the supposedly government insensitivity had been the cause of persistent conflicts and confrontation with government and oil companies in the area. Women suffer great hardships in times of conflict and the Niger Delta women are no exception. During the conflicts with oil companies and the Nigerian government, women are subjected to all kinds of violence - sexual such as rape; physical violence such as beatings, maiming murder, and destruction of properties. The effects of these conflicts on the social wellbeing of the women folks in this area were assessed in this study. dc.description: This article is on Environmental Management and Toxicology 2014-01-29T00:00:00ZAssessment of Rainwater Quality in Warri and Environ, Southern Nigeria for Domestic PurposesAgbozu,I.E, Maminor,T.R and Bassey,U (2024)https://fupre.edu.ng/handle/123456789/1152025-04-04T18:27:44Z2024-06-28T00:00:00Zdc.title: Assessment of Rainwater Quality in Warri and Environ, Southern Nigeria for Domestic Purposes dc.contributor.author: Agbozu,I.E, Maminor,T.R and Bassey,U (2024) dc.description.abstract: The study aimed to assess the physiochemical characteristics of rainwater in Warri and its environment was investigated. Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, and Cr concentrations in rainwater from the roof and non-roof sources were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Three geospatial locations comprising Jakpa, Udu, and Ubeji were selected based on prevailing anthropogenic activities. The rainwater samples were systematically collected from the (aluminum) roof and non-roof sources for the months of April, June, August, and October 2022, treated and analyzed in the laboratory for sixteen physicochemical parameters. Results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA, and T-test for the determination of the level of relationships and variations across geospatial locations. Significant correlations (r = 0.72) exist between Cr in rainwater from the roof and non-roof sources. Implying point-source contaminations and may be emanating from the influence of roof materials. Furthermore, high concentrations of Cd and Pb in roof source above WHO standards were mostly in Jakpa and Ubeji. The calculated Health Risk Index (HRI) for children and adults is greater than 1. The results showed that most samples from the locations are considered not safe (HRI > 1) especially for Cd, which means that there are potential health risks in consuming rainwater from Jakpa, Udu and Ubeji. Therefore, there is a need for a prompt sensitization program to dissuade people from directly drinking rainwater from these locations. dc.description: Scholarly works in Environmental Management and Toxicology 2024-06-28T00:00:00ZAnalysis of the Electricity Distribution Supply in Eastern Nigeria: Current Challenges and Possible SolutionsOnyishi ,D,C and Ofualagba ,G ( 2021).https://fupre.edu.ng/handle/123456789/1142025-04-03T11:10:47Z2021-01-01T00:00:00Zdc.title: Analysis of the Electricity Distribution Supply in Eastern Nigeria: Current Challenges and Possible Solutions dc.contributor.author: Onyishi ,D,C and Ofualagba ,G ( 2021). dc.description.abstract: Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is the Distribution Company responsible for electricity disbursement for the South-East geopolitical zone in Nigeria, comprising of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. EEDC is allocated 9% of the total electricity generated by the 28 generating stations in the Nigeria's National Electricity Grid. This paper assesses the operational efficiency of EEDC in electricity distribution to its constituent states. Electricity Distribution Analysis on EEDC was conducted for the month of July 2020, using Power Optimization Software. The results obtained showed that EEDC could only distribute 41.7% of the electricity required by its constituent states, resulting in only 10 hours of electricity in the region on any given day. EEDC's technical distribution losses decreased the number of hours of electricity available in the region from 23.4 ± 1.3 hours to 10.1 ± 0.5 hours. No algorithm is currently employed by EEDC to distribute available power, resulting in an unpredictable and erratic power supply across the region. The recommended solutions for EEDC are investments in EEDC-owned Embedded Generation (EG) units to boost regional power generation, reduce and eliminate EEDC technical distribution losses, and implement an automated power disbursement algorithm using regional classification. Automated rationing and distribution of available grid electricity using region classification ensured commercial regions received the available electricity from EEDC during the day (7 a.m. - 5 p.m.) to promote industrial economic activities, while residential regions received the available electricity from EEDC at night (12 a.m. - 4 a.m. and 6 p.m. - 12 a.m.). It also made Grid Electricity from EEDC predictable and available when consumers needed it the most. These solutions would ensure, a predictable and constant electricity supply in South-East Nigeria. dc.description: Scholarly work on Electrical Engineering 2021-01-01T00:00:00ZDE-RISKING "SEARCH" FOR THE BLACK GOLD: GEOPHYSICS, ANSWER TO QUESTIONS UNKNOWNOGAGARUE, D.O.Ehttps://fupre.edu.ng/handle/123456789/1132025-04-03T11:10:47Z2024-11-20T00:00:00Zdc.title: DE-RISKING "SEARCH" FOR THE BLACK GOLD: GEOPHYSICS, ANSWER TO QUESTIONS UNKNOWN dc.contributor.author: OGAGARUE, D.O.E dc.description.abstract: "Black Gold" is another word for petroleum. Petroleum is derived from the words petra (rock in Greek) and oleum (oil in Latin). Hence, petroleum is simply rock oil and is more often called crude oil. The word “crude oil” is, however, limiting because crude oil has some natural gas in it when it is produced. For example, a single barrel of crude oil extracted from the earth may contain enough natural gas that can fill our homes. Therefore, in general terms, petroleum refers to crude oil and natural gas. Perhaps the realization of this fact was the reason for the change of name from the Nigerian National Oil Corporation to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in 1977. Petroleum is often called black gold because when crude oil is extracted from the ground, it is mostly black in colour, and because of the oil and gas in it and due to their value, it is often described as gold. dc.description: 8 TH IN THE SERIES OF INAUGURAL LECTURE OF THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES, EFFURUN, DELTA STATE 2024-11-20T00:00:00Z6TH INAUGURAL LECTURE RADIATION RAIN, RUIN BUT REIGN, -MAN IN THE RINGAgbalagba,E.Ohttps://fupre.edu.ng/handle/123456789/1122025-04-03T11:10:47Z2024-09-05T00:00:00Zdc.title: 6TH INAUGURAL LECTURE RADIATION RAIN, RUIN BUT REIGN, -MAN IN THE RING dc.contributor.author: Agbalagba,E.O dc.description.abstract: Physics is a branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. It has several branches. It is declined as the science that deals with the structure of matter and the interactions between the fundamental constituents of the observable universe (Einstein's 1926 Britannica essay on space-time). It dwells more in the course of this lecture on Radiation Physics, as it affects and relates to the environment, human health, and radiation protection. The term "radiation" can be defined as the energy that is emitted as electromagnetic waves or particles and travels through the atmosphere or a material medium. Radiation is felt when we work in the field on a sunlit day, or when we stay by the fireside. Radiation is energy that moves from one place to another in a form that can be described as waves or particles. The word "radiation" arises from the phenomenon of waves radiating (i.e., traveling outward in all directions) from a source. This aspect leads to a system of measurements and physical units that apply to all types of radiation. Radiation is a natural phenomenon of emission of energy in the form of electromagnetic that obeys Pauli's exclusive principle, travels through space or medium, and impacts man and the environment. Radiation is always around us all the time, and as such, man is constantly exposed to it. This exposure has influenced our survival, reproduction, and evolution. dc.description: 6TH INAUGURAL LECTURE DELIVERED BY PROF. The theory of Vibration studies the biomechanics of vector-borne human infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The creation myth is a supernatural mytho-religious explanation that describes the beginnings of the existence of humanity, earth, life, and the universe(cosmogony). A myth is an imaginary or fictitious thing or person, an unproved or false collective belief that is used to justify a social institution. The creation myth, therefore, is the symbolic narrative of the beginning of the world as understood by a particular community. dc.description: 9th In the Series of Inaugural Lectures of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun 2024-12-11T00:00:00ZAssessment of Solid Mineral to Soil Radioactivity Contamination Index in selected Mining Sites and their Radiological Risk Indices to the PublicAgbalagba,E.OChaanda,M.S.Egarievwe,S.Uhttps://fupre.edu.ng/handle/123456789/1102025-04-03T11:10:47Z2021-06-11T00:00:00Zdc.title: Assessment of Solid Mineral to Soil Radioactivity Contamination Index in selected Mining Sites and their Radiological Risk Indices to the Public dc.contributor.author: Agbalagba,E.O; Chaanda,M.S.; Egarievwe,S.U dc.description.abstract: This study examined the radioactivity levels of soil samples within selected solid mining sites in Nigeria using high purity germanium (HpGe) detector. Sixty soil samples in all were collected from the ten solid mineral mining sites investigated and six samples were collected as control samples from non-mining environment for analyses. The results of the activity concentration values obtained for 40K, 226Ra and 232Th are 100.22 Bq kg-1, 33.15 Bq kg- 1 and 77.31 Bq kg-1 respectively. The 226Ra and 40K activities were found to be within the United Nation Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) acceptable permissible limit, but the 232 Th mean value was above the permissible limit of 30 Bq kg-1 for the public. In comparison, 40K, 226Ra and 232 Th soil samples 20 mean activity concentrations were higher than the control soil samples values by 48.6%, 43.7% and 62.3% respectively. The results of estimated radiation hazard indices indicate average values of 150.72 Bq kg-1 68.40η dc.description: Scholarly works in Physics. 2021-06-11T00:00:00ZThe Librarian as Information Scientist: A Comparative Review of Opinions and ConstructsOdiachi, RUrhefe-Okotie, E.Ahttps://fupre.edu.ng/handle/123456789/1092024-09-10T13:06:45Z2023-01-01T00:00:00Zdc.title: The Librarian as Information Scientist: A Comparative Review of Opinions and Constructs dc.contributor.author: Odiachi, R; Urhefe-Okotie, E.A dc.description.abstract: The salient contestation of the professional to be addressed as “information scientist” and the place of a “Librarian” in this global dispensation is a motivating ideology for this article. Descriptive research design was used for the study. A total of four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of the study comprised (98) librarians in the six Federal universities spread across the six states of South-South, Nigeria. No sample was drawn due to the controllable size of the population. The instrument used for data collection was a researcher constructed questionnaire titled “Library Services as Determinants of Job Performance of Librarians Questionnaire (LSDJPQ)”. Data gotten from the study were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study reveals that the extent of job performance of librarians in Federal Universities in South-South is considerably low. It was also revealed in the study that, lack of interpersonal skills among staff, lack of adequate ICT facilities and poor funding among others have hindered effective service delivery of librarians. Recommendations were made based on the findings, the recommendations include that university, funding bodies, and agencies should all be fully committed to providing sufficient financing for the effective and smooth functioning of university libraries. dc.description: Journal Article 2023-01-01T00:00:00Z
