Integrated Institute of Environment and Development is a world class Centre of Excellence for multidisciplinary graduate education, applied research and capacity building in natural resources management, environmental protection and sustainable development in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

ABOUT THE INTEGRATED INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

The Integrated Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), was born out of the need to research into and proffer solutions to environmental challenges such as: environments affected by natural disasters, environmental pollution from crude oil exploration and production (E & P) activities, domestic and industrial wastes polluted sites, corrosion and deterioration of crude oil E & P facilities, remediation of hydrocarbon impacted sites among others.

IIED was established in 2017, in collaboration with the Foundation for the Conservation of Nigerian Rivers, a non-governmental organization, with the vision to conserve Nigerian rivers, restore degraded environments and developmental initiatives that ensures a sustainable environment.

IIED was eventually approved as a Centre by the Governing Council of the University with an expanded scope to conduct specialized environmental competency certificate courses, postgraduate programmes and innovative researches that would produce graduates with relevant skills to proffer solutions to environmental challenges for sustainable development.

IIED had as her pioneer Ag. Director, Dr. Jerry Osokpor, who handed the baton of the institute to Dr. (Mrs) Laurelta Tudararo-Aherobo in July, 2020.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

This programme has been designed to train quality postgraduate degree holders of Environmental Management and Sustainability or related disciplines for advanced research and individual application of research in specialized areas. The programme aims to produce graduates with sound academic knowledge in various aspects of Environmental Management and Sustainable Development, and to foster proficiencies in the techniques of Environmental analysis necessary in the understanding of the environment which will enable them teach as academics in any of the universities or work in research institutes/industries where the industrial application of their experiences can be put into use.

The postgraduate programs aim to meet the following objectives:

Produce high level man power in the environmental sciences through the acquisition of requisite skills and knowledge to manage the environment and for national development.
Develop in graduates a sense of inquiry, capacity for independent research and motivation to extend the frontiers of science and technology.
Produce graduates who will be adequately equipped for relevance in the global knowledge economy.
Produce graduates who are capable of applying appropriate scientific principles for solving environmental problems for the promotion of human well-being.
Produce manpower with optimal environmental competencies and skills to function effectively in the academia and the private sector.

IIED also has as one of her core objectives, development of competency with regard to environmental management. One sure way of implementing this, is via a programme of environmental trainings designed to give individuals that work within the environmental field and their employers’ greater confidence in the quality of courses they participate in.

At IIED, is a team of technical experts who have hands-on experience in managing a variety of environmental risks. Their consulting experience and up-to-date knowledge about the statutes, regulations, standards etc., provide an in-depth technical knowledge to the participants.

In addition, IIED also conducts customized trainings for different companies such as refineries, petrochemical industries, processing and manufacturing industries, power generating companies, hotels, private establishments and governmental regulatory agencies among others.

Target audience are Managers, Supervisors, Policy makers, CEOs, Environmental Managers, Process Engineers, Health and Safety professionals, Non – Governmental Organizations, members of professional Associations and the Academia.

INNOVATIVE RESEARCHES

IIED, is also involved in innovative researches such as:

Afforestation of degraded Environment caused by natural disasters. Case study- Degraded landmass in Orogun, Ethiope East, Delta State.
Impact of Oil exploration and production activities on Mangrove swamp forest in the Niger Delta region.
Study and management of corrosion-causing microbial communities involved in microbial induced corrosion of oil installation facilities and petroleum products.
Production of biodiesel from Algae species. The product would be used to blend diesel from crude oil so as to reduce the environmental impact of diesel in the event of a spill.
Study of the REDOX Potential of environmental substrates (soil and water) in the Niger Delta region, to assess the potential corrosivity on Oil Exploration & Production (E &P) facilities.

MILESTONES IN IIED

Since her assumption of duty as Ag. Director, the following milestones have been covered:

Development of the curriculum for postgraduate (PGD, M.Sc and Ph.D) programmes in the institute.
Development of specialized competency development certificate courses.
Collaboration with public and private organizations such as; National Water Resources Institute, Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), National Energy Commission, African Development Bank (AFDB), Thermosteel Environmental and Analytical Laboratories Limited, Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL) among others.
